Maritimes - The Gaspe Peninsula

Perce

The huge rock formations at Perce and the bird sanctuary at the nearby Ile Bonaventure bring thousands of visitors each year to this serene cape at the eastern tip of the peninsula.

A green kayak approaches the smaller rock.

The kayak now approaches the hole in the bigger rock.

The Perce rock can be reached by boat and, at low tide, by wading from the mainland coast. There is a 30-foot difference between low and high tides.

As the tide gets lower, you wait at the mainland coast.

Then, the water gets low enough that for you to cross.

Looking for a bird's eye view of the rock? Park your car behind these houses near the library and climb up the trail to where the big cross is located.

From near the cross, you can see the boat docks and houses on top of the other cliffs.

The rock is at the opposite direction. Can you see the people crossing?

There are several places to stay in Perce. We stayed at a bed and breakfast place at Cap Blanc, which is just 5 kms away from the boat docks.

Nicole Dorion runs and owns Gite Du Cap Blanc (ndorion@globetrotter.net) whose rooms after her children and grandchildren. We were lucky to get the room with its own entrance door.

Tip: try the Gargantua Restaurant atop the hill. Excellent food and good view (if there's no fog). Nicole used to work there.

Cap Blanc is a cape with a lighthouse just south of Perce. The lighthouse overlooks Ile Bonaventure (covered by fog).

Perce's coast consist of rocky cliffs with magnificent views of the ocean.
