A Day In Provence

Vacation really started with a drive to three cities in the region of Provence - Avignon, Pont Du Gard, and Nimes - located three hours west of Nice.

Avignon

The residence of  the first seven of the French popes is located in this city, the Palais Des Papes.

The St. Benezet bridge used to cross the Rhone but part of it was carried away by floodwaters.

Pont Du Gard

The Roman aqueduct is an engineering marvel built in 19 BC. Its 30 miles of waterway carried fresh drinking water to Nimes, the Roman city. Its stone blocks were shaped so that they could be put together without mortar.

Nimes

Nimes has managed to preserve the impressive structures built by the Romans when they flourished in this city.
